Op-ed: Lawmakers need to enact a balanced state budget

John Bouman, president of the Shriver Center and chair of the RBC executive committee, and Laurence Msall, president of the Civic Federation, co-authored an op-ed published in the State Journal-Register. The op-ed catalogues the disastrous damage being done by Illinois’ ongoing budget stalemate. It calls on the leaders of both parties to propose a budget that details the revenue sources they would tap and the spending cuts they would make.

RBC members united in Springfield to tell Governor Rauner and state lawmakers that we are "one Illinois" and communities across regions and sectors are suffering from the budget impasse. Leaders representing human services, higher education, working families and faith communities stood together to demand a fully funded yearlong budget with adequate revenue to fund the services that all Illinoisans need to thrive.
