This Just In…Fair Tax Plan Introduced

House Deputy Majority Leader Lou Lang introduced a ‪tax rate plan today that would be contingent on voters approving a constitutional amendment allowing a graduated income tax (aka a "Fair Tax"). It would raise $1.9 billion to stop further cuts to families, communities, and small businesses. It would also cut taxes for 99% of Illinois families.

The Wells Center in Jacksonville was forced to close their detoxification program which annually treats over 350 individuals. The closure will cost lives and millions in taxpayer dollars. Their Executive Director writes: "Governor Rauner, Representative Davidsmeyer, and the rest of the General Assembly need to put non-budget issues aside and pass a budget that chooses revenue over cuts to health and safety. When lives are on the line, a budget can’t wait."

RBC Endorses Fair Tax Amendment

The amendment would permit the state to have a Fair Tax, where people with higher incomes pay a higher rate and people with lower incomes pay a lower rate. The RBC supports the Fair Tax initiative because it squares fully with the RBC's principles: it opens up ways for Illinois to raise adequate revenue in a fair way, so that the state can fully fund vital services and make smart investments.

Today, the Fiscal Policy Center at Voices for Illinois Children released an updated report detailing the negative impact the budget impasse has had on 43 services.
